Avoid Dirt In Your Drinking Water

If you have turned on your tap water and quickly became aware of an odd scent or the color has changed, you are most likely quick to question what has allowed for this sudden change.  There are a few reasons why your water has changed with the most common reason being organic matter. Organic matter is simply dirt or other sediment that has settled in the water supply and is common to change the color of drinking water.

Dirt and debris will only impact your water supply if there is a water main break or if a fire hydrant in the area has recently been used. I both of these scenarios, the pipes experience faster flow which will result in more sediment in your potable water. In most cases the dirt may look unpleasant but is actually harmless. Regardless of your opinion, you may want to hire a licensed master plumber to observe and discuss if a repair is required.

Another common occurrence is the presence of chemicals and heavy metals which can pose serious health risks. Some chemicals are more dangerous to others and it is always suggested to speak with a specialist if you have become aware of these issues.

If you are experiencing air in the water main it will look white or cloudy. Where this may not cause an immediate issue, the air will cause pipes to rust, corrode and will end up leaving sediments in your water. Air will also reduce the amount of water pressure and restrict your water flow.

The most common scenario that may cause dirt or debris in your water is lead pipes. As time goes on, we continue to hear more about the health risk associated with lead. It is suggested that everyone performs a lead test on their drinking water and replace all of the lead pipes feeding water into your house.

If you have any direct concern or questions, it is very important that you speak with a licensed professional only and obtain information specific to your needs.
