A Brooklyn homeowner called 311 after noticing large amounts of water coming up in front of her house early Wednesday morning. He told the 311 representative that the city had paved the roadway one week prior and was concerned that they may have damaged the city water main when working in-front of her house. A DEP field crew was dispatched to the house within hours when they quickly determined that it was actually the homeowner’s water main that was leaking; the homeowner was issued a DEP 3 day notice stating he had three days to repair the water line leak in the roadway.
The homeowner contacted Harris Water Main & Sewer Contractors and was very anxious due to the limited amounts of time he had to replace the water line. A Harris rep arrived at the house within one hour to provide a free estimate; he explained that the work could start the very next day with all required permits being secured and confirmed that the company was licensed, bonded and insured. The homeowner went online to do his own research and make sure that Harris was not subcontracting any of the work; he recently had a bad experience with a company subcontracting and not completing the job as per contract. After reviewing the Harris website, Google reviews and the BBB website, he was confident that he found the right company to replace his water line.

Harris showed up the very next morning and began opening the roadway to confirm the 3 day notice was issued accurately. It is part of Harris water standard protocol to confirm that the notice was not issued in error, after performing a noise test on the water line inside the house; the “tap hole” was opened in the roadway and the tap connection was closed. If the water leak stops once the tap connection is closed, it confirms the notice was issued accurately and the water line must be replaced.
** The tap connection is a valve that connects the homeowner’s pipe to the city pipe and may be used to turn off the water feeding the house without affecting any of the neighbors.

Harris continued opening two more holes, one in the street and one on the property before the new water line was installed from the city main to inside the house with a new house control valve. While opening the roadway, Harris came across a tap connection that was too small and no longer fell within NYC DEP plumbing code. Harris immediately contacted DEP who arrived at the house within one hour to install the new tap connection on the city main. The new tap connection would not only bring the house piping up to code, but would also increase the amounts of volume and water pressure throughout the house. The water main installation was completed shortly after the new tap was installed leaving another satisfied and pleasantly surprised Brooklyn homeowner.
