Recently in Brooklyn one of our neighbors called to inquire on how he could fix his water main that was leaking in the street. Unbeknownst to him there are many rules and regulations to follow when working in the streets of NYC. His original idea was for he and a friend to rent a jackhammer and dig in the roadway where the leak had surfaced and repair a section of lead pipe. What he didn’t realize was that he must obtain permits with DOT & DEP to perform this kind of work. He also wasn’t aware that it is illegal to repair a lead pipe in NYC and the entire water line had to be replaced with copper.

The customer was extremely upset that he was hit with this DEP violation out of nowhere. The Harris office staff understood they had to be extremely patient and considerate of how he was feeling. We scheduled an onsite meeting with the customer which was completed with 20 minutes. To the customer’s surprise, the water line installation was not anywhere near the cost that a few other contractors had described over the phone. Harris was hired on the spot. The leak started to have an impact on the homeowner’s water pressure, for this reason we scheduled the job to start the very next morning.
We began by excavating in the roadway to first close the “tap connection” which controls the water from the city main, to the homeowner’s house.

Once the tap connection was closed and the water was off, we began disconnecting the old water line in anticipation of the new copper water main connection.

The crew continued to work for the next few hours before all of the water line tunnels were completed and finally the new copper was installed.

The customer was pleasantly surprised that there was no cost increase once Harris Water began opening the roadway. The new main was installed within 5 hours of work and the final restoration of concrete was completed within 24hrs!
