Installing a New Curb Valve in Brooklyn

We’re excited to share our latest YouTube video documenting a recent project in Brooklyn. In this video, we walk you through the process of installing a new curb valve after the FDNY issued a violation to a building for not having one.

The Backstory

It all began when the FDNY inspected the building and found it non-compliant due to the absence of a curb valve. This vital component allows the water supply to be shut off from the outside in case of emergencies, ensuring safety and quick response times. Given the seriousness of the violation, immediate action was necessary.

Step 1: Exploratory Excavation

Our first step was to conduct an exploratory excavation of the sidewalk. This involved carefully digging to expose the existing water main and determine the current setup. We intended to install a curb box sleeve, a protective casing for the curb valve, ensuring it remains accessible and functional over time.

The Discovery

Upon excavation, we discovered that the water main lacked a curb valve altogether. This surprising find meant we had to pivot from our initial plan. The absence of a curb valve was the reason for the FDNY’s violation and underscored the urgency of our task.

Step 2: Installing the New Curb Valve

With the situation assessed, we moved forward with installing a new curb valve. This process involved:

  1. Shutting off the Water Supply: To ensure a safe and efficient installation, we temporarily shut off the building’s water supply.
  2. Preparing the Site: We dug further to create enough space for the new valve and curb box sleeve.
  3. Installing the Valve: Carefully, we installed the new curb valve, ensuring it was securely connected to the water main.
  4. Securing the Curb Box Sleeve: Finally, we installed the curb box sleeve to protect the new valve and ensure easy access for future use.

The Outcome

With the new curb valve in place, the building is now compliant with FDNY regulations, enhancing its safety and functionality. This installation not only resolved the violation but also added a crucial safety feature for the building’s occupants.
