Recently in downtown Manhattan a group of hotels were required to update their water mains feeding the buildings internal sprinkler system. The hotels engineer was required to bring the fire sprinkler mains up to code, this required the existing fire sprinkler water mains to increase in size.
Over the previous week Harris Water completed the third of the ten sprinkler mains required for an upgrade. At this particular location the existing 2” sprinkler main was required to be upgraded to a 3” pipe.
After Harris obtained all required DEP and DOT permits, they began opening the roadway for the installation which would take place the next day. The entire “dig out” process was completed within eight hours and was now ready for the next day’s installation.

The pipe was first connected to the city main which was located in the middle of the roadway.
Next the pipe was run under the roadway in a tunnel from the roadway, to the public sidewalk.

At this point the curb valve was installed on the sidewalk and the pipe was run from the sidewalk, to inside the building.
