Harris Water Main & Sewer Contractors was hired by a development group to install the main water and sewer line for a new hotel in Manhattan. The work took place in midtown Manhattan and the project began like every other installation in NYC. After obtaining all DOT and DEP permits, Harris began excavating in the roadway for the new sewer line installation. After two days of digging, Harris encountered bedrock which required special equipment and a lot of time to break.

Digging as usual |
At this point Harris had to focus all attention on breaking rock before thinking about the pipe installation. Unfortunately when dealing with bedrock, there is no telling how much time it will take to remove the required amount of rock. In some cases the rock is soft and can take a few days to remove, in other cases there is extremely dense rock which may take months to remove.
In this case Harris was dealing with an extreme amount of dense rock which required a special rock drill to make holes in the bedrock. Once the bedrock was drilled, a rock splitter was now used to break the rock in the location that had just been drilled.

After three weeks of breaking bedrock, Harris was able to start working on the water main and sewer installation. The piping installation was completed within three days after the pipe was installed, including all DEP inspections.
