Roots Cause of Broken Sewer – Quick Fix

Tired of waking up to the smell of raw sewage every few months?  So was this extremely frustrated homeowner that had spent thousands of dollars maintaining his sewer line over the previous decade.  He was told that a monthly maintenance plan would avoid him from ever having to replace his sewer. What the sewer cleaning company didn’t tell him was that the roots had already protruded through his existing clay pipe and at some point the sewer would fail.

Roots formed in the shape of old pipe

This owner still attempted to have two more drain cleaners attempt to clear the sewer pipe, he was trying to avoid spending thousands of more dollars on a new sewer line replacement as well as digging up his property and roadway.  He had a high pressure water jet, gas and a 3” blade utilized as one last attempt, which all failed.  At this point the owner had no option but to have his sewer line replaced on an emergency basis.

On the first day of excavating, the sidewalk was dug up in preparation for the new 6” cast iron sewer line.

Safety first!

Once the excavation process was completed, the new pipe was installed and inspected by the DEP. Not only would it have been illegal to do the work without a DEP permit and inspection, it also would have been challenging to sell his house in the years to come without a proper DEP sign off.

The roadway was excavated the next day, following the same process as the sidewalk installation.

Once the final DEP inspection was completed, the roadway was based with concrete in preparation for the final roadway restoration.

Completed!
