It is common for a New York City homeowner to experience roots in their sewer line if the sewer pipe exits the house within 15′ of a tree. There are several options when experiencing sewage backups due to root intrusion, unfortunately the simplified option is too late in many cases.
If you were lucky enough to become aware of root intrusion of your sewer line in the early stages, you may have luck cutting the roots from inside the sewer pipe. In many cases a quick pipe cleaning will serve as a temporary solution to your sewage backups, it is important for you to maintain your sewer line every six months to avoid any larger issues.
In other cases as displayed in the video, the roots have been growing for years and are entering the sewer line from several sections and all directions of the pipe. You may want to try and clear the pipe however, you may end up having to perform a sewer line replacement.
The homeowner in the video decided to alleviate the possibility of future backups and had his sewer pipe replaced from his house, out to the street where the city sewer connection is located
