If you are experiencing a backup of your sewer line it is most important to first get a professional diagnosis. It is advised not to call your general plumber for a sewer backup, you should have a drain cleaning specialist to diagnose and clear the sewer line.
Once you find a reputable specialist to work on your pipe, he should first use a sewer snake and try to clear the pipe. In many cases the sewer may be clogged with sanitary napkins, wet wipes etc. and simply needs a routine sewer cleaning. If the pipe is clogged with tree roots, the sewer snake can be used to remove small to medium size roots that have entered the pipe.
If the initial step does not work, the drain cleaner will utilize a high pressured power jet to try and clear the pipe. A power jet is a high pressured system used to remove debris and clogs using water. The water will apply more power than a sewer snake, and ultimately clear the pipe in a way that a snake cannot.

If you are still suffering from sewer backups, it is a good idea to have a camera inspection performed on the sewer pipe. The camera inspection will determine exactly what is going on with the pipe, if it is cracked, separated, sagging, etc. The camera will also determine the exact location of the problem which will be useful in the event that the pipe needs to be repaired.
If you still have a problem at this point, the pipe may need to be repaired or replaced in full. If you have a clay sewer line, it is always suggested not to entertain a sewer repair, it is almost guaranteed that you will have another problem in the near future. If you have a sewer problem with a cast iron sewer line, it is still advised not to repair the sewer pipe however, it is less risky than repairing a clay pipe.

The sewer pipe could not be cleared
Recently a homeowner attempted every method to clear her sewer line with no luck. She attempted to have a high pressured jet clear the pipe as a final resolution which had failed. She was also made aware that the pipe was a 70 year old clay pipe, and her only option at this point was to replace the pipe with cast iron.
The sewer contractor obtained all required permits, excavated the roadway, installed the new cast iron and obtained inspections all within two days. The homeowner was upset that she had to replace the pipe, yet was happy that the process was seamless.
