Recently in Brooklyn a property owner contacted DOT after observing a sinkhole in front of her house. They kindly requested that the city come out and repair the roadway to avoid her children from any danger. After a brief investigation the DEP was called on site to investigate, a sinkhole of this size does not form in the street for no reason. After completing a camera inspection, it was determined that the homeowners sewer line was broken and causing the street to undermine.
The owner was issued a DEP Cease & Desist Notice which required them to have the sewer line repaired by a licensed and bonded water main and sewer contractor.
Due to the severity of this emergency, Harris Water Main & Sewer was on site working under a DOT emergency permit within 24 hours.We first began by excavating in the roadway with a Case 580 backhoe until we reached the broken sewer line which was 11′ deep in the street.
We now prepared the grounds for the new 6″ cast iron sewer line repair which was completed and inspected by DEP.
