Late last night we received a call from one of our customers after the NYC DEP made them aware that their water main was leaking. It turns out that one of their neighbors noticed water seeping out of the roadway and contacted 311 to report the issue.
The DEP arrived on site and investigated a few of the surrounding houses by performing noise test on the pipe from the inside of the house. The initial homes were confirmed not to be leaking as the pipe was completely silent. The DEP was quick to determine that our customers pipe was leaking after hearing a loud noise on the pipe when in fact it should have been completely silent.
On of the Harris crews arrived the very next morning and began excavating in the street to reach the city main and turn off the water main connection in the road. Now that the water main connection was closed the crew could begin working on installing the new copper pipe as a direct replacement of the existing lead water main. After becoming aware that the existing pipe was made of lead it was no surprise that it was leaking and should be replaced with copper.
The total installation took 8 hours and was completed in one single day. The DEP 3 day notice was now satisfied and the homeowner was happy to have a new copper pipe which will last them another 60+ years.
