When a property owner is first made aware that their water main is leaking on the outside of the house they do not know what to expect. Most people do not understand the extent of the work, that the repair will require excavating in the roadway and permits with the city.
It is important to familiarize yourself with what a typical work site looks like in order to prepare your property, and avoid any surprises. It is also important to understand that the repair is not a quick fix and may take hours, or even days in some cases.
It is important to consult with your plumber to determine if the water will be shut off for an extended period of time, or if you can continue to use water for the majority of the day. You may also want to review how many excavation holes will be made in the roadway, sidewalk and your property. Before signing a contract you may want to confirm with the plumber who is responsible for the final restoration and all cost associated with doing so.
A few key items to review:
- How much of the existing water main are you replacing?
- Are you replacing all of my existing valves?
- Does your cost include all fees associated with permitting?
- Who will pave the roadway with asphalt?
- Who will restore the cement on the property or sidewalk?
- Do you use any sub contractors?
- Is there any follow up with the city that is required to close out the job?
Once you have a detailed understanding on what is scheduled to take place at your house it is OK to hire the licensed plumber that you felt most comfortable with after reviewing all details!
